[ENG Trans] Column – An Inconvenient Truth about JYJ’s TV Appearance

[Column] An Inconvenient Truth about JYJ’s TV Appearance

OCT 04, 2011

[Medias]

Here is an idol group that is the center of Hallyu[Korean Wave].
They are immensely popular.

As an idol group, they have expanded their activities by combining unit-activities in acting, musicals and other fields. Their songs swept charts on music sites as soon as their album was released, pre-order of the album was 300,000 copies and even some record shops made exclusive counters only for their album. They are also due to have concerts in Europe, beyond the U.S.A.

However, music distributors refuse to distribute their album when this idol group plans to release, venues reject their concerts when they plan to have one in Japan.
TV program is cancelled even though they already have finished recording [of the program], and they even suddenly get cancelled of the stages that they are scheduled to perform to celebrate the event as the honorary ambassador.
You can see them on news and dramas but cannot see them on programs of entertainment department [of the same broadcasting company] at all.

If you see these twofold situations, you might think that this idol group committed some kind of heinous crimes or had really bad reputations that make people reluctant to work with them. Or you could doubt that they refrain themselves from TV appearances as a mysticism strategy.

What if all of these doubts are not true?
What if they are banned on TV without any heinous crimes committed, always receive a favorable evaluation from colleagues who work with them and sincerely desire to appear on TV?

Then it is a natural to think that there is something wrong.

This idol group who I have explained on this column, is JYJ.
The group is formed by Junsu Kim, Yuchun Park and Jaejoong Kim from TVXQ, the best Hallyu idol group of Korea, and they do not seem to have their activities freely even though they are massively popular. And they speak about these situations so calmly, as if these things are just everyday life to them.

They are idol stars and there are likes and dislikes to see them just like all idols have. Ordinary men might do not like them or there are fans and anti-fans even among women. But those have nothing to do with these situations. The thing you should focus on is that they [JYJ] are under unfair situations despite the fact that they have the most powerful strength as a celebrity.

JYJ has one of the most powerful strength as celebrity in public. The power of a celebrity comes from fans. The fandom JYJ has passes over Korea and the scale is beyond your imagination. The royalty of fans are amazing. At the moment in Korea, the pre-order of 300,000 copies of album is absolutely outstanding and this is just a simple example of their fandom’s volume and strength. However, they receive all kinds of unfair treatments although they have such powerful strength.

What could be the reasons for this? No one could say clearly.

But one thing seems to be clear – There are a lot of possibilities that some big power exists[behind of this situation].

There is a word P.S.M on the song ‘Pierrot’ on their latest album.
SBS and MBC enquired what the word meant, Jaejoong Kim who wrote the words of the song answered that it stands for ‘Performance,’ ‘Success,’ ‘Museum.’

The song was passed the broadcasting reviews of those two broadcasting companies.
But KBS interpreted this arbitrarily and the song did not pass the review [of KBS].
It did not even ask the meaning to the creator of the song.

Then what made KBS so sure of its review, on which certain basics?
There must be reasons.

One thing is clear. Other artists may face even bigger interferences that actually can make them impossible to live their basic life. For them, it is a problem of life or death.
I seriously think that this situation beyond fairness, which can severely damage someone’s living, needs to be corrected.

KBS previously said that JYJ would be able to appear on Music Bank when they release an official album. And JYJ says they really want to be there.
The songs already took the top of music charts and album sales seem to take the top for sure. Also their title songs, <In Heaven> and <Get out> already passed its broadcasting reviews. If JYJ cannot appear with these facts, it must be inferred that KBS, the public broadcasting cooperation that must consider its viewers as its priority, puts something above the viewers.

Also I expect that it would be way off to save artists who cannot have activities on TV with nothing to blame if JYJ could not appear on Music Bank.
You might think that there is no way but to surrender to the power [that causes this situation]. And surrendering to the power could directly become the beginning of unconscionable bargains, because this is a matter of simple survival to someone.

The issue of JYJ’s TV appearance is not just intolerant matter about whether an idol group can appear on TV or not. This is an issue of that whether the healthy industry can be settled or not. The current audition craze manifests show people’s desire to see no other than a fair society that evaluates someone only by ‘ability’. JYJ’s case is the same.

Whether you are a fan or not, this issue is definitely a matter you must think about.

About ‘fairness’.

[ENG Trans] JYJ “We have grown as artists since we stood on our own feet after leaving SM.”

[Interview]
JYJ “We have grown as artists since we stood on our own feet
after leaving SM.”

Oct 04, 2011

[Asia Today=Nam Hee Woo Reports]

There is a phrase: After a storm comes a calm.
The 2 years after they left SM Entertainment might have been continuation of going through the dark tunnel, to the group JYJ (Jaejoong/Yuchun/Junsu).

But they grew strong. They became stronger both in music as singers and acting as actors. Especially the unity between the members got stronger above all.
Their strength was proven by the result. The pre-order of their first Korean album ‘In heaven’ was 300,000 copies. Moreover, JYJ showed their reserved strength as all songs of the album have been ranked on the charts of the music sites as soon as it was released and 150,000 copies of domestic release were sold out.

Also JYJ, who toured around in Thailand, Taiwan, Beijing, Canada, Los Angeles, San Francisco and many other cities so far, is going to show their true power as a Hallyu [Korean Wave] star through the tour in Europe in the second half of the year. Their tour is the first solo concert as a Korean artist and due to be held in Barcelona, Spain (Oct 29) and Berlin, Germany (Nov 6).

We [Asia Today] met JYJ at a café in Jongro on Oct 30 and they just could not hide their joy for releasing the first Korean album, as well as thrill and pride of the tour in Europe.

Q. How do you feel about making your way to Europe?

“It was a pressure when we had the concerts in Asia and the U.S.A. because it was our first solo concert [in those countries]. But we gained confidence after watching many international fans enjoying listening to our music. We would like to show K-Pop and JYJ’s own colors rather than doing music based on European trend, so that we can be recognized.”

Q. What is the concept of the 1st Korean album?

“It is really meaningful because it contains all the journeys and memories from JYJ showcase (2009) to World Tour concert. It’s a kind of sad that those songs are released as an album [CD] after 2 years, but we think it will be a turning point. It’s just significant because of the fact that we can actually introduce our music to public.”

Q. The process [of the album] must have been different, how was it?

“Of course there must have been something inadequate for perfection and something good in parts as well. All in one, the thing that we felt while we were working on our own songs was that there was no barrier. It was amusing that we can give our own opinions to each other and try something new.”

Q. KBS made ‘Pierrot’ [words written by Jaejoong] unqualified for
broadcasting review. What do you think?

“KBS didn’t even ask about what the words [of the song] really meant, and just decided based on their arbitrary imagination. P.S.M stands for Performance Success Museum. Those refer the places that people pursuing material success only are in.
It’s not producer Soo Man Lee.” (Jaejoong)

Q. Tell us what you think about the situation that you are having difficulties in TV appearance.

“It is so natural that singers want to come on stages and perform their songs after releasing an album. But it is just sad that we cannot even have a single chance.
Are we not popular?” (Junsu)
“It’s more like desire to show our songs as musicians rather than just wish to appear in music programs.” (Yuchun)

Q. Yuchun and Jaejoong both made a successful debut as actors.

“It was a pressure because I was given a lot of love after ‘SKK Scandal’. I felt like there was something lacking when I was doing ‘Miss Ripley’, my second drama, so I got more hunger for acting. I want to show myself improved for the next one.” (Yuchun)

“Things were manic in my mind when I started ‘Protect the Boss’ at first. I think I was under pressure and might have started the drama without much determination as an actor. Then I resolved not to be seen like a singer among other actors and challenged myself.” (Jaejoong)

Q. Junsu has done musicals, and have you ever thought of acting on TV?

“I was proud of Yuchun and Jaejoong as their teammate because I’ve seen the all three dramas that they appeared in. But I didn’t want to start it hastily after watching the members staying up all nights. I have the vicarious satisfaction as the two members are doing so well.” (Junsu)

“Junsu made a big fuss, saying that he wouldn’t do dramas without decent determination after his appearance in ‘Scent of a Woman’ as a cameo. Haha[laughed]. (Yuchun)

Q. It has been 2 years since you became independent from SM Entertainment.
Do you think JYJ has had development?

“I was so surprised when I heard the ordered quantity of the album. I didn’t expect that many, but came to think that I should do better after watching this kind of result. Especially I think we lightened up and felt more comfortable compared with 2 years ago.” (Yuchun)

“We had to do everything by ourselves from releasing the album to doing concerts. It was a pressure, but I just thought it was fortunate to have the members with me. We will do our best so that one day we can say that, ‘it was a good memory and we grew a lot’ when we remind this later.” (Junsu)

Q. Do you think you succeeded in standing on your own foot, after coming out of the shadow of TVXQ?

“Releasing the first Korean album is the product of our efforts from the last 2 years.
It is not important whether we came out of the shadow of TVXQ or not.
And we are still TVXQ. It’s more like we have our activities under the name of JYJ, in TVXQ. It is sad to hear that people call us ‘former TVXQ’.

Q. What kind of goals do you have as a singer?

“I wouldn’t say that we want to be ranked No.1 [on charts] no matter what as a musician.
I just want to do music as much as possibly can and let people listen to our music. I don’t want to use music for commercial purposes, but want to work on music freely with our hearts loving music.” (Yuchun)

“If there is something I hope, I wish we could have the same chances and stages like other artists have. We will endure until the time comes.” (Junsu)

[ENG Trans] JYJ, “No casting offer yet… we believe in KBS’s fairness”

[NEWS] JYJ, “No casting offer yet… we believe in KBS’s fairness”

SEP 26, 2011

[OSEN=Na Young Choi Reports] While the group JYJ (Jaejoong, Yuchun, Junsu) has proved their popularity by sweeping on-line charts without any TV appearances, fans’ interests are now focused on whether JYJ can appear on music programs or not.

According to ‘Olleh Music’ on Sep 16, JYJ’s first Korean album <In Heaven> that includes the songs revealed during their World Tour Concert topped the social chart by monopolizing the first, second and third place [of the chart] at the second week of its release.

This achievement is more meaningful because they achieved this result without any appearances in music programs, not like other artists who released albums at the same period.

Also the album, which is due to be released on SEP 27 recorded 300,000 copies of preorder, is temporarily out of stock at all online purchasing sites and it caused emergency to supply ordered quantity because they had a flood of orders from the countries including Japan, China and many other Asian countries. However, it is still difficult to see JYJ on any music programs including major broadcasting channels.

“There has not been any casting offers for TV appearances yet. But we are watching the situation as the album has not been released yet” said C-JeS Entertainment, in charge of JYJ’s management.

C-JeS continued, “KBS said that it regulates [JYJ’s] appearances on music programs because of the legal dispute with the former management company and we made official complaint that the court already had ruled twice that JYJ would be guaranteed their [free] entertainment activities. KBS accepted this and announced that there would be no problems when JYJ releases official [Korean] album.”, “We believe in fairness of broadcasting and want to make appearances [on TV] for fans who have been waiting for JYJ’s new album for a long time”.

But JYJ does not only focus on TV appearances with their album release. “JYJ mainly focuses on having successful concerts in Japan and Europe (as the first Korean artists to perform in Spain and Germany), and now they are preparing various ways to meet the public besides TV appearances”, explained a marketing staff of JYJ’s album.

JYJ already revealed the title song <Get Out> by LG Mobile advertisement first and would open the specialized video community to interact with international fans soon. Also they are preparing donation project for patients and disadvantaged people they met while acting as honorary ambassadors throughout the year of 2011.

Your sound supports, donations of rice[Dreame] and interests in the products that JYJ works as a model have surprised professionals in each industry and satirical advertisements on the newspapers, buses and subway that demanded JYJ’s [free] activities on TV paved the way for media to acknowledge such sophisticated fandom.
